In The Pocket - Episode 25

Championship Weekend is here

It’s the time of year when the number of teams still playing gets smaller, but the games get bigger. The Patriots host the Steelers and the Falcons welcome A-A-Ron and the Packers to the Georgia Dome.

It’s the Patriots sixth consecutive AFC Championship Game. In our last episode, Steve Salisbury, our man from Sacramento affectionately known as 'Steak', told us New England and Pittsburgh are playing for a spot in their franchise’s ninth Super Bowl. Steak likes the Patriots. Our stats man, Daniel Juchima, is backing the Steelers. History is backing New England: they are 5-1 in AFC Championship Games played in Foxborough.

The Patriots had a solid win over the Texans in divisional round. They put up 30 points against Houston, and yet people think it’s evidence the Patriots are vulnerable. Interesting huh? That’s the level of expectation for Bill Belichick’s team that a definitive win over a playoff team is seen as sub-par.

Adios Georgia Dome

The Packers and Falcons will play the final game in the Georgia Dome on Sunday in the US (Monday morning Australia). The last time these two teams met, Atlanta won by 1 point (33-32 at the Georgia Dome in Week 8). It was shortly after this loss that Green Bay Quarterback A-A-Ron Rodgers said he felt the Packers could 'run the table'. So far, he’s right.

Juice thinks this game will be a shootout, and the team who scores last will win the game. It will be a last-man standing affair, and it’s going to be awesome to watch.

What is going on with California’s football teams?

The San Diego Chargers are moving to LA. The 49ers still don’t have a coach. The Raiders could move to Las Vegas and the Rams are still terrible. The San Diego move is disappointing. It’s a team with history and a loyal fan base not exclusive to San Diego. It’s a win for the Spanos family, it’s a win for the NFL, it’s a loss for football.
